Hilton Niagara Falls - Phases I & II, Niagara Falls, Ontario
The renovation of the Hilton Hotel Phase I in Niagara Falls required that prime views of the Falls be achieved. Phase I included a 34-storey, $42M addition. Major challenges included tying into the existing building; amendments to the Scope of Work included the addition of three storeys and major changes to the pool canopy. The clear-span open atrium necessitated column and wall transfers in an earthquake zone; sophisticated modelling of the structure was carried out to optimize cost. A mat foundation resolved the challenge presented by deep sand layers. The open-concept roof-top restaurant required a clear span of 16m structural steel beams. Concrete construction progressed at a rate of two floors per week.
Hilton Niagara Phase II is a 60 storey structure, 500 suite hotel, which includes waterpark, convention centre, entertainment facilities and a 333 cars below grade parking garage. The structure is capped with an iridizing metal roof which is classically peaked.
The top floors of the Hilton Niagara Phase II are decorated with arches and spandrels to achieve the softness of the resort ambiance. These large windows and balcony also form the environs for the Observatory, offering some exterior space and a relief to the verticality of the 60 storey structure.
